What is a Dental Cone Beam CT Scan (CBCT) ?
A dental cone beam CT scanner uses x-rays and a computer to produce cross-sectional and 3D images of the upper and lower jaw including all teeth.
It provides undistorted and accurate views that cannot be acquired by 2D X-rays. It is non-invasive, safe and quick with precise results.
The greatest advantages of a CBCT over a medical CT is that the level of effective radiation dose the patient receives is significantly less by up to 98%*.
Patient positioning for these examinations involves sitting in a chair as opposed to lying on a bed and moving through a tunnel.
Scan times are reduced considerably minimizing patient movement.

CBCT is a digital x-ray scanner specifically designed for scanning the head and jaws. The scanner rotates 360 degrees around the patient’s head in a matter of seconds. The x-ray is a low energy fixed anode tube similarly used in panoramic machines. This method reduces radiation scatter common to most conventional x-rays. The cone shaped x-ray provides 360 views that can be presented in 2D image and 3D volume for advanced planning and diagnostic support. The CBCT scanner is fast, comfortable (nothing goes in the mouth), and painless for patients. It provides a complete set of maxillofacial images with less radiation than conventional orthodontic and medical type CT work-ups. CBCT now can re-create true size cephalometric and panoramic images, virtually eliminating the need for conventional orthodontic x-rays, so your patients will be comforted by the knowledge that you have all the information needed to evaluate and plan their treatment
No preparation is required. Removal of metal objects such as jewellrey, piercings from ‘ the neck up’ is required. OPG scans usually take less than 5 min, CBCT scans take a little longer, you ususlly spend about 15 minutes with us.
When you leave our facility, the results may be only partially complete- this is certainly the case for Cone Beam CT scans which could take up to 30-40 minutes after you leave to prepare. After putting any finishing touches to the images they are checked and delivered to the referring doctor with a radiological report. This whole process may take a few days. Your referring doctor will then use the results in treatment of your specific case.
